Design Free Thursday | Movie Stars & Inanimate Objects.
31st March
Hey, you guys know that joke – an English(wo)man, a French(wo)man and an Italian(woman) walk into a bar… Oh, hang on. That doesn’t sound right… Anyway, today’s post is pretty RANDOM dot COM. Lucky it’s Design Free Thursday. Phew. Which means that (almost) anything goes.
I recently came across these images of the three lovely leading ladies photographed with inanimate objects. What do you think is going on there – was that some kind of fashion back in the day? Either way, it definitely made me smile and thought I should share the love…
Boulevard Leopold & Sleep In The City | Antwerp, Belgium.
30th March
Anyone going to Belgium any time soon? No? Well, that’s too bad. Just consider this post a little feast for your eyes. And if you are, look no further for places to stay.
Boulevard Leopold is a super beautiful little B&B located in a 19th-century house in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter. Consisting of only three rooms and two apartments, it is a little jewel with rooms that are full of old-school richness and personality rarely found these days. They serve breakfast every morning with homemade bread, jams, cheeses and yogurt. Yum. And even if you are not staying with them as a guest, you can still go there to eat…
Inside a Dark Chamber | Camera Obscura.
29th March
Hope you guys are in the mood for some mind-bending images? What’s new, I hear you say. Well, I guess you have a point – you’re on yellowtrace after all. Hooray!
I’ve been meaning to post about camera obscura technique for ages now. Sometimes I can’t keep up with myself, let alone everything else. So much amazing content, so little time. Anyway, camera obscura (in Latin – ‘camera’ = vaulted chamber or room; ‘obscura’ = dark) is an optical device that projects an image of surrounds on a screen. This is, in fact, one of the inventions which lead to photography. Camera obscura device typically consists of a box with a whole in one side. However, with these images I am showing you today, the ‘box’ is in fact an entire room. ..
Art With Tools | Andrew Myers & Walton Creel.
28th March
When I think of art, I imagine an artist working out of their sun filled studio space, wearing a colourful bohemian outfit, complete with a hat or even a cravat, a paintbrush in one hand with a palette in the other, their face showing traces of colour pigment etc. The last thing I imagine is an artist drilling a ‘canvas’ with screws and power-tools, or better still – shooting a gun to create art. Blimey! What the hell happened? Was I asleep and missed a memo on art becoming something blokes do out of their backyard sheds?
Seriously though, who would have thought that guns and power-tools could create such beautiful pieces? Now, these guys certainly don’t operate out of some shed – they a proper grown up artists who do amazing things with tools and firearms. Meet Andrew Myers and Walton Creel…
Concept Mood Boards | Bohemian Boutique Hotel.
25th March
I decided to do something which I hadn’t really done before on the blog – I wanted to share some of my recent work with you guys in the hope that you will find it interesting. I was recently approached about designing an interior for a boutique hotel/ bar/ restaurant here in Sydney, in a beautiful heritage building. This project seemed like a dream come true in so many ways, and it also happened to be in a building which I knew and admired for a long time, as I walked passed it on my way home for almost four years.
This chance to design a boutique hotel was such an incredible opportunity to fuse everything I knew about contemporary interiors and my (extreme) love of heritage buildings. Alas, things weren’t meant to be and, due to a number of reasons, I recently withdrew my proposal for the project. But let’s not get into that – I am here to share some mood boards and a little concept story which I developed during the short time I was involved with this amazing building…
